Gimli Glider Exhibit Project

An amazing Canadian Aviation Story occurred on 23 July 1983.  An Air Canada jumbo jet with 61 passengers and 8 crew ran out of fuel north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Without engine power this situation could have ended disastrously, but the pilots skillfully glided the aircraft to a safe landing in Gimli Manitoba – something that had never been done before with a jumbo jetliner!  It made aviation history, changed commercial aviation forever and put Gimli Manitoba on the world map.

Gimli has a rich aviation heritage but it is slowly being lost over time. The Gimli Glider Museum  wants to tell and preserve this incredible story and Gimli’s aviation heritage in an exciting way for generations to come.  Now is the time to do this especially since the Gimli Glider aircraft  is slowly being cut to pieces and other aspects of Gimli’s aviation heritage are gone or disappearing.

This one-of-a-kind Museum is located in Gimli, Manitoba where the wide-body jet made its impromptu landing.  Personal memorabilia and other artifacts have been donated by the aircraft captain and local residents to enhance the quality and uniqueness of the Gimli Glider Museum.  Visitors can enjoy a documentary video in our theatre area seated in real aircraft passenger seats.  They can also try their hand at flying and landing a jetliner in our cockpit mockup/flight simulator.

We have several certified authentic parts of aircraft #604, the Gimli Glider, that support the  Gimli Glider story and highlight Gimli’s rich aviation heritage.  A story as told by the individuals who were there and experienced it first hand over 30 years ago.  A story unique to Canadian aviation history with parts visitors can actually reach out and touch. A story we bring alive so today’s visitors can personally experience and relate to what happened on that fateful day.

To design and build future displays, acquire the audiovisual gear,  display cases and stands all require money.  We need your financial help and generosity to create and sustain this first class museum so we can tell the Gimli Glider story in an entertaining and enlightening way.  The saying “no bucks, no Buck Rogers” holds true for the Gimli Glider Museum.  The MuseumTeam has the drive and the ability to create new Museum Exhibit displays but we lack the funding to do so.

You can make a difference!  Together, we can create new and interesting displays and sustain an entertaining museum for all visitors to enjoy – one we can all be proud of being a part of.   You too can be part of the Gimli Glider Story!

$20.000.00 is needed to create  new and mobile Gimli Glider Museum displays that can be leased to other aviation museums as part of making the museum self-sustaining and the story known to a wider national audience. Your funds will also support follow-on activities of buying, transporting and restoring other Gimli Glider aircraft pieces and save a part of Canada's Aviation History.

We sincerely thank you for your time and consideration of our Museum to create a lasting record of this amazing Aviation Story that happened right here in Manitoba.  Your donation will use help us enhance and sustain the Gimli Glider Museum for everyone’s benefit – today and tomorrow.
