Joe Montplaisir was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, and has been battling the disease at the University of Minnesota Children’s Masonic Cancer Center in Minneapolis. One week prior to Joe’s diagnosis, he was a healthy Junior at Zimmerman High School.  Joe is loved by family, friends, classmates and student-athletes throughout the entire state. He is a three sport student athlete and most recently competed in the Minnesota State High School (just over one month ago) wrestling championships placing 5th.  Through all of his athletic achievements, he is an excellent student, a tremendous classmate, and a model son and brother.

During this unexpected battle, Joe has shown amazing grit, positivity and faith.  We are all in awe of his character.  His parents (Sarah and Derrick) have been with him every minute of his battle providing support and encouragement.  This is especially difficult with the current COVID-19 pandemic, as there are restrictions for only one visitor at a time.  Sarah and Derrick switch off seeing Joe - 24 hours a day.  Joe’s sister Kaja and brother Jack, have been admirably managing the Montplaisir house in Zimmerman and praying for Joe.

Joe’s classmates, teachers in the community, friends at Zimmerman High School and his Wrestling Family have been providing meals for Kaja and Jack, and have showed an overwhelming amount of love and support for Joe.  As a family, we are truly grateful!  We have a freezer full of food and goodies which is very much appreciated.

In coming days and months, as we work with Joe battling this illness, there are many expected and unexpected expenses that will arise.  The most urgent of these expenses is to “deep clean” the Montplaisir home as Joe’s immune system will be weakened by the chemotherapy.  After the home is cleaned from top to bottom, the basement will become Joe’s recovery room to accommodate him during this journey. The basement will provide a “natural barrier” and allow friends and family to visit through the sliding screen door, while remaining a safe distance from Joe.

As we progress through the spring and summer, it is unclear how much time away from work will be necessary for Sarah and Derrick.  Also, we are not sure the type and amount of “remodeling” of the basement and durable equipment will be needed for Joe to slowly work his body back into WRESTLING shape.  Having Joe compete next year will be a stretch goal that will keep his mind sharp during this battle.

Joe has a great support system with family and friends, and we are all committed to eliminating all financial stress related to caring for Joe.  If you can help us with this effort, any and every donation we will be allocated to Joe and his recovery.

We are truly grateful for your support of this wonderful young man.

Sincerely,

The Family of Joe Montplaisir
