My name is Nikhil Autar. I am a doctor and 2024 NSW Young Australian of the Year.
I'm also a leukaemia survivor. As a side effect of treatment, I developed a condition called Avascular Necrosis. My hip and knee bones are dying (and have collapsed), so I need to use a wheelchair to get around.
One day, during med school, I was unable to find out if there a ramp, or where the nearest parking was, to get to a tutorial at Blacktown Hospital. A HOSPITAL didn't have accessibility information at hand!
Not knowing in depth information about a venue, and the community, has restricted me from attending events, accessing opportunities, and being involved in my community. 1/5 Austrailans have a disability. Millions more are elderly, or have illnesses which restrict our movement. We need to know where amenities - from parking and accessible toilets, to quiet rooms, water fountains, and when quiet hours are - to make our lives easier.
That's where Knia Maps comes in. We crowdsource information about accessibility features from Businesses, Government and members of the public to make the world more accessible for all. Our app (coming soon!) will let you see this information, and contribute to help millions of Aussies too. In fact - you can contribute already (check out Kniamaps.com to add information about a venue, and to sign up to test out our app)!
But we need those early funds to pay our engineers (who are from diverse, differently abled and carer backgrounds), and to pay for server costs and everything else associated with an app.
Anything you can contribute will help make Australia - and the World - a more welcoming and fair place, for all.
How the app looks - showing things from water fountains and bathrooms to ramps and accessible bus stops!
Take accessibility feature surveys - you can Enter information now! And partner with us - if you're a business, investor, or if you want to help map Australia. All at kniamaps.com
