Knix Kix Sarcoma Gone

Our dear friend, Kim was first diagnosed with an aggressive sarcoma in February 2021. At that time, a GoFundMe helped with fertility preservation, and Kim and her fiance, Michael, were extremely grateful. She subsequently underwent treatment for the first occurrence in her leg - a tumor with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Unfortunately, in June 2022, despite this treatment she had a second disease recurrence in the form of two lung metastasis in her left lung, representing stage 4 disease. She underwent lung surgery for their removal, taking time off work for recovery. On subsequent scans this fall, she has had further metastatic recurrence along her post-surgical scar in her left lung.

This time, her treatment plan looks different - new evidence has arisen and suggested benefit to additional chemotherapy to prolong her life, as well as more surgery to try to remove the disease.

Though she, Michael, and her family remain optimistic for curative treatment, each subsequent recurrence reduces the likelihood of sustained remission.

According to her oncologist, Kim is expected to be off work until July 2023 at the earliest if she tolerates the chemotherapy, with post-surgical recovery and ongoing intensive chemo.

It would be a big help to Kim and Michael to have some of the financial stress lifted of yet another prolonged absence from work, as well as expensive medication co-pays, physiotherapy and other unexpected associated costs. This will allow her to focus her energy on recovery.

She is hopeful to resume her medical training after this treatment, and she is approaching the end of her training, currently at the end of her PGY4 year, with plans to do additional clinical research training beginning in the fall, and one further academic year of fellowship.

Above all else, Kim and Michael are hopeful for messages of encouragement and support during this next phase of treatment for her stage 4 cancer. She will provide updates along the way on this page.
