Knockananna Camogie 50th Anniversary Fundraiser

Donation protected

Knockananna Camogie Club are seeking your support to help raise funds for our 50th Anniversary Year  Fund Raiser.

2020 was a very challenging year for raising the funds needed for the running of our adult and juvenile teams.  We were not able to run any of our usual fund raising events  in 2020 like our Easter walk, Table quiz, Halloween fancy dress etc.

So we are calling all past and present players, supporters and communities to walk/run/cycle with us from May 10th to May 24th  and help us reach our target to have at least 50 families walking 50 kms during these two weeks. If we can raise €1 for every km, this will help us reach our financial target of €2,500 to go towards the running of the club for 2021 and allow us to host some additional events later in the year to celebrate 50 memorable years.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.....

Camogie sticks first appeared around Knockananna in 1971 when Rev. Fr. J. K. Gahan arrived in the area as curate and worked with a group of locals to set up the very first camogie committee comprising of Arthur Whelan, Bill and Mairead Kavanagh, Sean Foley, Seamus Kavanagh, Kathleen Whelan, Paddy and Ann Byrne, Denis Kinsella and Mick Whelan.  Over the hills in Bray, a new team was being formed and the two clubs got together for a friendly game. Knockananna Camogie never looked back after that. First they won the under 15 camogie title and then went on to win the Junior Championship in 1973.

More exciting things were to come 2 years later in 1975. Knockananna travelled to Cork for the Feile na nGael Camogie competition.  The club, new to camogie and new to this prestigious competition, took off to Cork to represent community, club and county with new gear and under the stewardship of John Cunningham and Margaret Kavanagh. The girls won all of their games to reach the Division 1 final against Crokes of Limerick.  The final was  played in St Finbars grounds and  Knockananna came out winners by 5-0 to 1-1 to secure the coveted accolade of best U14 Camogie team in Ireland. The team were welcomed to celebrate their national success at a reception attended by the Mayor of Cork and the Taoiseach of the day Jack Lynch. This was an amazing result for a club only 4 years in existence. Our heroes on this historic day were Mary Whelan, Rose Whelan, Betty O Keefe, Mary Whelan, Julia and Betty Coogan, Janet Foley, Mary Kinsella, Mary Byrne, Angela Foley, Sheila Foley, Catherine Dunne, Marie Coogan, Sadie Whelan and Patricia O Neill.  Bonfires, cabaret and crossroads dancing greeted the team on their arrival home in the early hours of that famous Monday morning- the stories tell us that celebrations lasted for weeks and the seeds were success.

The club went dormant during the early 90's but rose again in 2001. We have had a very successful 20 years since with our 2011 team following in their predecessors footsteps, bringing home the Feile na nGael cup again in 2011.  We also have had Senior County Championship wins in 2012, 2013, 2016,2017,2018 and are the current County Wicklow Senior Champions for 2020.

You can help our club to support our current players and to commemorate with our past members by donating via this GOFUNDME page.
