Knolveree Varner Forney, our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on November 14, 2018, after complications from her over 20-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. She was a believer in innovation, research, and out of the box thinking when it came to her illness, treatments and fight for survival. During her 20-year battle, she also loved, supported and cared for her son, Albert Jr. (our son, brother, and uncle), through his own battle with a rare form of metastatic neuroendocrine cancer of the thymus. In losing Albert Jr. on January 28, 2009, she struggled, died a little herself, and then found the strength to rededicate herself to greater knowledge about treatments available to friends and herself in their battles with various forms of cancer.
Knolveree’s approach to fighting her cancer was holistic; whether the origin of a treatment was based in Western or Eastern medical philosophies, she left no stone unturned. During her journey, she sought out experts in the fields of oncology, Eastern medicine, spiritual healing, diet and nutrition in an effort to beat the disease while maintaining a high quality of life. As a result of her pioneering spirit in terms of medical treatments, we were rewarded with over 20 years of her extraordinary presence, love, and guidance. This is especially significant given the fact that only ten percent (10%) of the current Multiple Myeloma patients survive longer than 10 years after their initial diagnosis; making Knolveree one of the longest living Multiple Myeloma survivors.
Knolveree Varner Forney embodied the meaning of Perseverance. We looked for the best way to honor her life and the way she lived it. After Albert Jr.’s death, Knolveree, along with her husband, Albert Sr., donated $25,000 to establish a Research Grant at University Hospital Medical Center in the area of clinical trials. The funds were used to identify biomarkers in neuroendocrine tumors. We learned through this effort that while a research grant is helpful, it is short lived; however, an Endowment has the ability to provide funding for impactful work in perpetuity. In a desire to bring about change and to support the search for improved cancer treatments, better techniques and, hopefully, cures for all forms of cancer, we could not think of a more meaningful way to honor her life than by creating an Endowment in her and her son’s names supporting cancer research.
We selected the Case Research Innovation Fund at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio as the home of the Endowment.** The Case Research Innovation Fund allows accomplished physicians and research scientists at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center to more swiftly pursue promising developments for all types of cancer. Through a competitive application and review process; pilot grants are awarded to research projects based on their potential impact on cancer research and patient benefit. These grants support early-stage research that lays the groundwork to secure additional support from federal and foundation sources with a return on investment of 10-to-1.
As a result, we established the “Knolveree Forney and Albert Forney Jr. Innovation Cancer Research Endowment” fund. We are working closely with Case Western Reserve and one hundred percent (100%) of your donations to the Knolveree Forney and Albert Forney Jr. Innovation Cancer Research Endowment will go to support Case’s Research Innovation Fund and their efforts to impact cancer research and directly benefit individual patients.
Knolveree would not want you to send flowers; she would very much want you to send whatever you can to support this fund. You can use the link below to contribute or send a check directly to the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. *** Please note that if you send a check, you must write “Knolveree Forney and Albert Forney Jr. Endowment” in the memo section. Our initial goal is to raise $50,000, but this battle will go on for a very long time.
We, the family of Knolveree Forney and Albert Forney Jr. thank you for your support, consideration, and your donations.
