Koa's DOC Band Fundraiser
Donation protected
This is Koa, our fast growing, almost 5 month old baby boy. During his 4 month old appointment, we expressed our concerns about the flat area in the back of his head and were referred to Cranial Technologies (CT). When we went to CT and received our free consultation when he was 4.5 months, the imaging results showed that he had moderate brachycephaly and moderate plagiocephaly. The clinician informed us that since he is still under 6 months, it could stay the same, get better, or it may get worse. We were advised to give him 90 minutes of tummy time per day to see if keeping the pressure off his head would help. Unfortunately, only 2 weeks later, increased tummy time has not helped and we noticed that the flattened area was becoming more noticeable and feel that we should start treatment sooner, rather than later. After 6 months old, his head will begin to harden and treatment will become more expensive because it'll take longer to correct his skull shape. With that being said, his treatment will need to start as soon as possible.
We are asking for help because Tricare will only pay for his DOC band (helmet) if it was a postoperative medical necessity. Even with a 60% discount for being active military, the total comes out to almost $2000 for the DOC band.
This year has been a rough year; from car problems to medical bills, we've used up so much of our savings that mom is trying to finish her schooling and trying to find ways to earn the money. We don't normally ask for help, but we realized that we really need whatever help we can get. Any funding help we get would be greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read our a story ❤
*added picture is just for photo reference since I know many people are unfamiliar with what DOC bands look like and what they are used for. The "helmet" is a medical device (DME) which is why it's so expensive.
