My husband and I got married on October 15th, 2016. On November 15th, 2016, my husband was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. In the months leading up to our wedding, we could tell that something was wrong with his hip, but attributed it to a recent car accident he had been in. The week after our wedding his pain worsened and we noticed a lump in his pelvic area, so we finally went to a walk in clinic the weekend after our wedding. At that time, he was diagnosed with a hernia and a surgery was scheduled for November 3rd.
Needless to say, the surgery did not go as planned. I was called into a conference room and told that he did not have a hernia, he had a “mass” but they didn’t know what it was. After what felt like a lifetime, we finally got the answer. He has a rare type of bone cancer known as Ewing’s Sarcoma. The oncologist that we saw at first had never even seen this type of cancer, so he recommended that we move from Springfield, Missouri to St. Louis, Missouri so we could see one of the top sarcoma specialists in the country. Thankfully we were able to move with family and are currently getting excellent treatment, but it was discovered that the cancer had spread to his lungs.
When his treatment comes to an end, he will have endured at least 17 cycles of chemo, possibly even 19. On odd cycles, he only has one day of chemo, but on even cycles he has chemo 5 days in a row. He also will need numerous blood transfusions, of which he’s already had 3. He may also need 5 to 6 weeks of radiation and fairly extensive surgery. Every 4 cycles of chemo he gets scans done to see how the tumor is doing. After his first 4 cycles, we learned that the only possibility for surgery at that time was to amputate his left leg and part of his pelvis. We are currently attempting to shrink the tumor with more chemo before we resort to this surgery.
Every month we have to spend over $200 just on medicine at home to keep his blood counts up, to stop the nausea and the pain, and to keep him healthy. Between the doctor visits, scans, biopsies, treatment, and medications, our bills are quickly adding up. We have done our best to keep up with them, but we have quickly fallen behind as he is unable to work with such an intense chemo schedule. My husband is the love of my life and I would do anything to make sure he gets the treatments that he needs, which is why we are reaching out for help. The money we raise will go towards all of his medical bills that we have and will have, and towards to costs of his medicines. We didn’t have a normal start to our marriage (while most couples have honeymoons we had hospital visits), but we are hopeful that with the support of family and friends, and with our fantastic doctors, we get to have a long life together. Thank you for all of your love and support!
