Kofi and Lartey's Education Fund
Hello!
We are the filmmakers behind the documentary "Kofi and Lartey".
We started this fund to contribute to Kofi and Lartey's futures and to support Abdallah's brilliant work with the youth of Agbogbloshie in Ghana.
‘Kofi and Lartey’ is a documentary about two young best friends who work on one of the world’s largest e-waste dumps and Abdallah’s mission to get them out into the world and away from the toxic work of burning and dismantling e-waste and materials to extract precious metals to sell.
Since filming, Lartey has been in school and is working hard to catch up with the other kids of his age, while Kofi secured an apprenticeship as a mechanic. However, the current situation in Agbogbloshie is not good. On July 1st 2021, the Greater Accra Minister led a team of military, police and other security forces to the scrap market without any prior notice and over 5000 scrap dealers were displaced as they bulldozed the area. From what Abdallah tells us, Agbogbloshie as we knew it is no more and it's a very tough and dangerous place to be.
With our help Abdallah is applying for scholarship programmes for Environmental Studies at different universities around the world to advance his own development and to better support his family, while in return he can offer his unique first-hand insight into life in Agbogbloshie.
In light of this, we have recently launched this fund to support Kofi, Lartey and Abdallah’s educations so they may go on to continue to learn and empower others and their community.
If you aren't in a position to donate, we would be so grateful if you could share this story with your friends.
