Kootenay Pedalwheelers Sailing for the Lake

Donation protected
Five local sailors are truly giving back to the lake they sail on. They race and cruise on a consistent basis on Kootenay Lake, and have decided its time to raise funds for an independent, inclusive non-profit who is dedicated to sustaining a healthy Kootenay Lake for future generations.

Mike Bowick, Tim Thurston, Tim Rippel, Jay Blackmore, and Roger Hassol, also known as The Kootenay Pedalwheelers are throwing their hats into the ring for the Race to Alaska (R2AK).On June 8th, 2020 the team sets sail from Port Townsend Washington to Ketchikan Alaska where they hope to be the first team to reach the big prize of $10,000 US nailed to a tree.  The team will donate 100% of the money to Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FOKLSS), along with all the funds they raise leading up to and during the race.

The R2AK is North America’s longest human and wind-powered race, and currently the largest cash prize for a race of its kind. Many teams fundraise to purchase supplies for the trip but the Kootenay Pedalwheelers have decided to direct their fundraising efforts to FOKLSS through this Go Fund Me campaign.

Who is FOKLSS?

Since 2012, FOKLSS has worked tirelessly to address environmental issues in the Kootenay Lake ecosystem. With a small team and a dedicated Board of Directors, FOKLSS has created and restored wetlands, trained citizen scientists to gather wildlife and water quality data and has run dozens of education programs for all ages.

They are often the ones who take the call when community members are concerned about pollution or misuse of Kootenay Lake. FOKLSS not only advocates for these residents but creates opportunities for all community members to become informed active water stewards.

Here is what FOKLSS Program Manager Camille LeBlanc had to say about this fundraiser,

"When we were approached by this team we were very excited for the opportunity to have Kootenay Lake represented on an international stage. We believe that this race will let the world see how much we love our lake, by reaching our goal of $10,000 while cheering on our local Sailors on their wind-powered voyage!"

Donating

Donations will go directly towards supporting  FOKLSS projects and programming around the lake.

Those who donate over $30 will be entered to win a Friends of Kootenay Lake  Hat or Watershed Map

We are working on finding a donor that will match funds and will be creating prize packages that you could be entered to win.
