It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Koua (Pov Sawm) Vang, a remarkable individual and loving father who touched the lives of many. On December 5th, he bravely concluded his battle with Colon Cancer, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and artistic brilliance.
Koua's journey with Colon Cancer began in August of 2020. Despite the challenges, he faced the diagnosis with unwavering strength and optimism. Commencing chemotherapy in September 2021, he fought valiantly, embodying resilience in the face of adversity.
A man of deep faith, Koua was a devoted disciple of Christ. At the age of 19, he served as a Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Washington D.C Mission during the late 80s. Notably, he was one of the first Hmong Missionaries and the first from the Nong Shala Hmong Ward in Sacramento. His commitment to bringing the message of Christ to the Hmong community continued throughout his life, contributing to the translation and editing of The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and the unofficial Hymn book into the Hmong language. In 2012, he authored his inaugural Hmong book, titled "Txoj Kev Ntseeg Uas Tag Nrho Yog Qhov Tseeb," aiming to forge a stronger connection between the Hmong community and Christ while providing answers to any questions they might harbor.
An artist at heart, Koua graduated from Sac State with a major in Art and Science in 1995. His love for painting manifested in beautiful creations, often gifted to friends and family. His artistic spirit mirrored his approach to life—full of color, creativity, and compassion.
In his professional life, Koua worked for the Department of Human Assistance, dedicating himself to public service. Family was the cornerstone of his existence, and he cherished every moment spent with his wife and seven children. He enjoyed leading them on hikes and visiting temples, consistently capturing photos and cherishing precious moments with his loved ones. From college students to elementary schoolers, his children are left with a void that only community support can help alleviate.
In this time of grief, we humbly seek your support. Donations will contribute to Koua's Funeral Service and provide much-needed assistance to his young family. Your generosity will not only honor the memory of a loving husband and father but also help ease the financial burden his family now faces.
As we come together to celebrate the life of Koua, let us extend our love and support to his grieving family. Your contributions will ensure that his legacy of love, service, and art continues to shine bright in the hearts of those he touched.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
With heartfelt gratitude,
The Vang Family
