Hi, my name is Kris Chetram I am 52 years old and I am a kidney and heart patient. I am living with a kidney that has 10% functionality. I’m taking over 10 different medications and I am insulin dependent.
When I was 18 years old I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I have handled my illness well. In 2017, I had bleeding in the back of my left eye and immediately went to the doctor. I was told that I would need laser surgery right a way or I would lose my vision. It took a toll on me, and I was very scared that I wouldn’t be able to see again. After laser surgery it took me 8 weeks to get my vision back. Then 3 months later I was diagnosed with kidney failure Renal disease stage 5. I attended Cleavland Clinic for all my visits to get on the waiting list, which took 1 year for all procedures to be completed to get on the waiting list, then to get a kidney transplant. In order to stay with Cleavland, I had to set up a payment plan to cover all my visits because the cost was growing fast.
In 2018, I had another bleeding, this time, in my right eye and had another laser surgery, but I was able to recover right a way. After 2 years of Cleavland I couldn’t afford the cost. Memorial Hospital was my next option. I went for a visit with the kidney transplant department and I was a qualified candidate to get on their waiting list for the first 6 months free of charge.
In January 2019, I developed new complications in my heart. I went for a stress test and my results came out abnormal. I then went for further testing to see what was wrong. I come to find out that I had 4 main arteries blocked 80-90%, that lead to my heart. Surgery had to be done as soon as possible. My advise from my doctor is to start dialysis 3 days prior to my heart surgery because my kidney was 12% functional. With surgery it would cause my kidney to go down even lower. Within 1 and a half weeks I had a quadruple bypass open heart surgery. All went well, but my recovery is still a challenge and I was out of work for 2 months. After surgery, I had to continue dialysis 3 days a week for 1 and a half months.
My heart surgery was over $350,000 on top of all my other medical expenses that I already have, which is making it very difficult to keep up with the payments.
I appreciate all the help, thanks to everyone for your support. Thank you.
