Kristina's Cancer Treatment
Donation protected
This past fall my daughter's best friend Kristina was diagnosed with breast cancer (Paget’s disease and DCIS). Later that winter, she was additionally diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (stage 1). These diagnoses came with sudden unexpected medical costs, multiple diagnostic procedures and a double mastectomy. Kristina wouldn’t ask for help, but I wanted to support her. If you knew her, you would too. Please consider donating!
Kristina is a hard-working, intelligent, lively 29 year old woman with plans to be a social worker. She was one semester away from a Sociology degree when she was diagnosed. Like many college students, Kristina and her fiance made a humble living in the food service industry. They were recently engaged, and starting to plan their wedding. While cancer has not stripped Kristina of her vibrant lust for life, it has taken a financial toll, and her fiance has had to help cover her living expenses.
Chemotherapy is expensive, and the medical costs are starting to build a mountain of debt. Kristina has not been able to work since she started treatment, and has another 4 months to go before possibly returning to work. Also to stay in college, she needs to make up a semester. All funds will go to pay medical expenses and one semester's tuition.
Specifics of her ongoing treatment regimen and diagnoses include:
1) Double mastectomy following initial diagnosis.
2) Biopsy of chest wall tumor revealed Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
3) Tested positive for the HER2 protein.
4) Treatment extended due to 2 and 3: weekly Taxol chemotherapy with Herceptin infusion; monthly Lupron and triweekly Neuopogen injections.
5) Reconstructive breast surgery.
