Support Heather during her cancer treatment
Who I am? I am a teacher who also loves to spend time helping animals.
My name is Heather Felton and I am an ESE (Special Education) teacher in Bonita Springs, Florida. At the end of May 2020 I received an abnormal mammogram which showed 4.5 cm of calcifications on my right breast. A few days later I had a biopsy which showed that I had breast cancer and I received the news at school while packing up my office/class during the last day before summer break, needless to say thatday was surreal!
Although I was terrified of the diagnosis, the good news is that it is Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS breast cancer) and it had not yet spread outside of the breast area. On June 22nd I had lumpectomy surgery and a week ago on July 27th, I began 6 weeks of radiation therapy which will be every day 5 times a week (since the cancer was the highest nuclear grade of 3).
I will be going back to work as a teacher In person on August 13th since that is what Florida is requiring and I will be going to my appointments from school every day. In the interim, since diagnosis, I have had appointments with the surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist and I am still under their care.
Although, thankfully I have had some help with my surgery bills, radiation costs and follow up appointments etc will also be costly while trying to live on only one household salary, a teacher salary during this trying time. I would greatly appreciate any help no matter how small you could give during these difficult times.
