Kyiv, 2022 - The Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal
Hello!
My name is Megan Frederick, and I am a music teacher at Okanagan Mission Secondary School. On Sunday, June 26th, from 12pm-2:30pm, we are bringing together all SD23 music students to perform the piece, Kyiv, 2022, as part of a massed band of over 450 students! Kyiv, 2022 was written by the famous composer, Brian Balmages, as a tribute for the Ukrainian people. The music tells the story of the current conflict in Ukraine and Brian is donating 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this piece to relief organizations in Ukraine. He is also asking directors to log their performances of the piece so they can track the reach of these performances. To date, he has raised more than $50,000 with over 200 bands having scheduled performances across five different countries, with middle school, high school, university, community, and professional ensembles all taking part.
SD23 students will be performing this special piece of music with guest conductor, Dennis Colpitts, and yes you did read that right earlier - the band will be over 450 students strong! Prospera Place is our official sponsor and has graciously donated the entire facility for our event! Admission to this event is by donation. Please save a screenshot or bring proof of your donation as your entry ticket. Cash donations will also be accepted at the door. If you are unable to attend our event, please consider still donating to our cause. Here's what you can expect the day of:
• Sunday, June 26th - 12:00pm - 2:30pm
• Doors open at 11:45 am
• 12:00 pm - Opening welcome and performance of Kyiv, 2022
• Vendor Fair! Shop some of Kelowna's best artisans, crafters, and local businesses. Partial proceeds from all sales will be going to our fundraising effort!
• Live music performed during our vendor fair
• Food trucks! We will have food trucks in the parking lot outside for your enjoyment
100% of all proceeds raised will go to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation. This organization uses funds to deliver aid and assistance– both in Ukraine and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in bordering countries. CUF continues its support for Global Medic’s efforts to deliver and distribute emergency family kits and food hampers to people in need in Ukraine and to displaced Ukrainians in Moldova and Romania. You can find more information on this fantastic charity here.
We truly hope that you are able to attend this event! It will be a wonderful afternoon of students using the power of music to enact change in the world.
