In August of 2022, Kyle began to walk with his right leg turning slightly inwards. Kyle attended his GP who advised that Kyle had in-toeing & he would need to be seen by a specialist for it to be corrected. Kyle was referred to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin (CHI).
2 weeks before Kyle's appointment in CHI Kyle developed a limp in his right leg. Kyle's parents (Adrian & Shauna) both thought it was down to all the activities Kyle was participating in as he was attending soccer, hip hop and swimming or maybe it was linked to his in-toeing. Kyle didn’t complain of any pain and was getting on with things.
In October of 2022, Kyle attended his in-toeing appointment & while at the appointment the specialist noticed Kyle's limp and the focus quickly shifted to the limp. He was then passed to an Ortho doctor there and then & his parents were both told the limp was of concern. They were told no amount of activities or in-toeing would cause a prolonged limp. X-rays were carried out on Kyle's hip and leg. Kyle's hip x-ray came back clear but his leg showed a growth on the bone which was of concern to the doctor. The doctor decided Kyle needed a bone biopsy which entailed removing the bone and sending it away for testing.
Kyle's bone biopsy was carried out and although the doctors were certain that it would yield results, unfortunately, it did not. Kyle's parents were given the news on Nov 21st and this shocked both Kyle's parents and the doctor. Kyle's parents were told to enjoy Christmas and he would be seen at a follow-up clinic in the new year. Less than 5 days later Kyle was back in CHI with a more severe limp, pain & unable to walk or use his right leg. More tests were carried out and it was discovered Kyle had a new growth lower in his leg. Kyle was placed back in a boot to offer him support until doctors could decide the best course of action. After multiple trips up and down for x-rays and tests Kyle then developed a fracture & on Dec 23rd while at an appointment Kyle's parents were told that Kyle had 2 bone conditions. The bone conditions were diagnosed from what was going on with Kyle's leg and Shauna and Adrian were advised these bone conditions were treatable but not curable and a treatment plan was put in place which would commence in Jan 2023…. Adrian and Shauna were both happy to finally have some answers.
Kyle was back for a check-up on Jan 13th and in his new x-ray it was extremely obvious that Kyle's leg had changed drastically. Kyle's Mum was shown the x-ray and told the news that unfortunately, Kyle did not have the bone conditions that he had been diagnosed with in December. Kyle needed to go back in for a 2nd bone biopsy at the next earliest availability as doctors needed to figure out what was going on. Kyle was brought in on Jan 19th for another much larger bone biopsy.
The 2nd biopsy did yield results & A week ago today Feb 3rd Kyles's parents were given the news of Kyles's biopsy results. Kyle has rare bone tumors in his leg that have only ever been seen in adults. The tumors are so rare that there is not enough research on them. Kyle now must undergo more surgery to have the tumors shaved off his bone and he will then be placed in a metal brace/fixator for up to 6+ months.
Kyle has a very long tough road ahead & will be monitored for years to come as there is a 25% chance of the tumors coming back. Shauna & Adrian’s employers are both brilliant and supportive of their situation but one of them must face temporarily giving up work to care for Kyle over the coming weeks & months.
I am doing this fundraiser to try and help with the costs both my sister and Adrian will face. Like most people they have day to day bills but now have the additional medical expenses for Kyle, the cost of traveling up and down for appointments, the cost of hospital car parking, the cost of accommodation, loss of wages and there will be additional costs of having specialized clothing made for Kyle....
