Thank you very much for all of your support!
***** At this time we ask that any additional support to the GoFundMe head to the foundation that we have since created for Kyle, "The Smaine Fund" (thesmainefund.com), created by his wife to help support athletes. Anything that additionally comes in through GoFundMe will go directly to Kyle's Foundation *****
On January 29, 2023, Kyle Smaine, beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, was unfortunately killed in an avalanche while on a ski trip in Japan. Kyle was a pro skier, talented cyclist, passionate adventurer, and an even more wonderful human. The many communities he touched have shown an outpouring of love and respectful words for Kyle, and we’re so grateful.
Amid the grief and despair, we all feel in Kyle’s absence, his family and friends are now enduring a painful reality and tedious process to arrange for his return home to South Lake Tahoe, California.
Death abroad is a complex situation, and the family is working closely with the Bureau of Consular Affairs and government officials from both the USA and Japan to ensure the end-of-life expectations are met and his body can return to US soil. Arrangements for his preservation and transport are subject to foreign law, permits, facilities, and customs requirements — creating unexpected and enormous costs.
With heavy hearts, we now ask for a different kind of support — to help with the logistics of returning Kyle home. If you can help financially, we deeply appreciate any contribution to help bring him home and organize a proper goodbye. ❤️
Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far. The amount of support has been unreal and we hope to continue to support Kyle's wife Jenna with any additional unexpected costs with everything else that comes in.
