Support OPIS in our mission to promote compassionate governance and prevent intense suffering
The Organisation for the Prevention of Intense Suffering (OPIS) is a Swiss non-profit think-and-do tank working towards a more compassionate world where governmental decision-making explicitly focuses on meeting needs and prioritises the prevention of intense suffering of humans and animals.
OPIS has been successfully advocating for better access to medications to treat severe pain, including from excruciating cluster headaches , and we are continuing this work. We take a strong stance against the abuse and torture of animals, and will be focusing even more on this area of huge moral importance. We have also amplified and joined voices setting out a pragmatic vision for peace in Israel-Palestine.
We collaborate with numerous other organisations, and are a member of the Coalition for a Global Citizens’ Assembly – a means for us to try to bring compassion for all sentient beings into global governance, and to promote depolarisation and increased global cooperation. We think this approach is essential for reducing the amount of extreme suffering over the long term.
We are currently preparing a "Guide to Compassionate Governance", drawing on the wisdom from several fields of expertise to highlight effective strategies and policies, which we will publish and communicate widely in 2025. We are also currently carrying out a unique, large-scale study to collect data on the suffering people experience due to a wide range of life conditions, which we will publish as part of a larger overview of human and animal suffering on our planet.
OPIS has a deeply rooted ethical foundation, a strong track record in several cause areas, and an understanding of the approaches and initiatives that are needed. We expect to have significant impact through the adoption of some of the concrete ideas we are promoting. Your support is crucial – thank you!
