"Leadership and Legacy in History" is the theme for National History Day 2015. Kyra decided to create a documentary (film) about Jane Goodall. She believes that Goodall was an inspiration to many by being a leader in her field of study. In her process paper, Kyra states that she "chose this topic because Jane Goodall was influential, not just in the field of science but to the average person. As a leader in the field of primatology, Jane Goodall not only made groundbreaking contributions to the sciences of primate studies and anthropology, but also opened many doors for generations of female field biologists to come. Her research and advocacy have created a lasting legacy of conservation and equality that will continue far into the future."

Kyra spent many hours researching, writing, creating, editing, and revising her project. Becoming a national qualifier was not an easy task. She had to compete on many levels before even being allowed to participate at the State NHD competition. Her school holds an annual Local NHD competition wherein all students' entries are judged critically by local volunteers from the community. After the Local competition, Kyra moved on to the District NHD competition at Central College in Pella, Iowa. The entries are scrutinized and held up to an even higher standard than at the local level. Finally, at the State NHD competition, held at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, Kyra's project was judged twice, in the preliminary round and again in the final round. At each level, the judges become more critical before they choose the best representatives for the State of Iowa.

After three straight years of qualifying for the State NHD competition, Kyra has achieved her goal of reaching nationals.  She is only the second Madrid student ever to qualify for nationals and she looks forward to representing both the Madrid Community School District and the state of Iowa in Washington D.C.  Iowa students competing at the national level do not receive any funding from the state and must pay for the trip themselves.  This campaign has been established to help defray the cost of traveling to the competition and of lodging for Kyra and a chaperone for the week.  This is a unique and exciting opportunity that will not only be fun, but will also be educational and an excellent learning experience.  Kyra would greatly appreciate any assistance you can give.
