L'incoronazione di Poppea

OUR MISSION:
We believe opera is an art form that is neither dead nor should be dying. Why, then, are such accusations constantly gathering ammunition? Many audience members are discouraged by the barriers to entry in opera: high ticket prices, lack of pre-requisite knowledge, and a belief that the stories represented are distant from their own lives and experiences. Our goal is to demonstrate that operatic stories are human stories, that they can be timeless, and even progressive; the core of each story contemplates the struggle of the human experience. Set in 1970’s Rome with non-traditional casting, we hope our production of L’Incoronazione di Poppea will give the diverse community of Queens and the LGBTQ+ community an opportunity to see themselves reflected onstage. We believe Poppea is an opportunity to create representation for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as for people of color, while providing a high-quality artistic experience for new audiences. Through the classic story of Poppea and Nero, we hope to shed light on the effects politics have on social issues, in the 70s, and even today.
Our production also strives to provide an opportunity for talented young singers to be paid for their contribution, an opportunity lacking from most young-artist programs. All money raised will be going toward paying the singers and musicians for their talent and hard work.
Because of the generosity of JCAL, tickets will be priced at $6 to insure no audience member is deterred from attending because of financial limitations!
Any contribution you can make is appreciated. Thank you for your support of classical music in the modern world!
Gratefully,
Christina Swanson and Karina Parker
