22nd and Mission Fire
My name is Perla Caro, I am a 17 year old senior at Galileo High School. Being a senior in high school I am currently going through my college application progress, my goal after high school is to become a primary grade teacher. I chose teaching out of all of the careers out there because I want to get the chance to teach and help people just like my teachers have done for me. I want to help educate people to become something greater than they are. Coming from a low income family the college process including other drawbacks have been quite difficult on my family and I, as if things weren't already difficult this incident happened to my family and I. I was just getting to my apartment (308), opening my door when my neighbor ran out of his apartment hysterically yelling at me to call 911 because his home was on fire and there was smoke coming out of his door. I was on the phone with a 911 operator frantically giving them our information as quick as possible, while at the same time trying to get my 13 year old brother and our dog Lisa who were home alone while my mother was working. While trying to evacuate some of my neighbors rushed into the elevator thinking that it was the fastest way to get out, bust as soon as I saw them I told them to get out and take the stairs. There were no fire alarms, smoke detecters, or sprinklers to notify the rest of our neighbors. I could clearly see the black and grey smoke building up as we ran down the stairs to get out of the building, I never truly thought that such a disastrous event like a 4 alarm fire would happen to us. We are living unstably and looking for a stable home to live in. I'm glad we made it out alive but we could use as much help as possible at the moment. We lost everything in our home of 25 years: clothes, shoes, simple essentials, and my mothers hardworking savings. As people say, "As one door closes another one opens." We are starting this new chapter of our lives with nothing and anything will help at the moment. Thank you.
