La batalla de Marcelo / Marcelo’s battle

Hello family and friends. Whoever knows me knows that this is super difficult and painful for me.
Seven years ago my nephew Marcelo was born. He’s the youngest of my brother Tommy and her wife Piera. At 3 years old, Marcelo was diagnosed with Autism. It was a shock for everybody, but it taught us to see him and love him in a whole different level.
This year, Marcelo had a few changes in his health, he lost weight, looked tired, and slept a lot. Something was going on. One day he threw up and the next day, school called saying that Marcelo looked sleepy and had fever. Doctor diagnosed him with strep throat, got and EKG performed because of his fast heartbeat and also order bloodwork.
The bloodwork was done on April 26th and at 7am the next day, the pediatrician call Marcelo’s parents urging them to take him to the ER because his bloodwork showed alarming results.
After more test at the ER, doctor told my brother and his wife that Marcelo had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and they had to act fast. He got admitted to the hospital that same day. On Monday 29th he got surgery to insert a port for chemo and bloodwork and on Tuesday they began chemotherapy.
Marcelo stayed at the hospital for 12 days. The first part of the treatment, called induction, lasted about 4 weeks and even though it was intensive and hard, it gave us hope because Marcelo is responding well to the treatment. After induction, doctors said that he is remission, which doesn’t mean that he is cured, just that the treatment is working. Doctors calculate over 3 years of treatment overall and periodical check-ups for the rest of his life.
Marcelo can’t go to school right now because his inmune system is weak and he could get an infection. He’s receiving instruction at home. He also had to stop doing a lot of the thing he loves, like swimming and his scouts meetings.
My sister-in-law had to stop working to be with Marcelo 24/7, giving him his medicines, taking him to chemotherapies and check-up to the hospital and just checking that he doesn’t get any fever or other sign of infection, because she would have to rush him to the ER.
Marcelo is battling like a true champion against this cancer and all we want is that he goes back to his normal life.
The insurance hasn’t say anything yet about how much they will cover for hospitalization and treatment, that’s why we don’t have a goal set yet, but they’re living now with only one income and they are having a lot of expenses.



Hola queridos amigos y familiares, los que me conocen saben lo difícil que es todo esto para nosotros y mucho más tener que contarlo, pero aquí vamos!
Les contaré que hace 7 años nació mi sobrino, mi niño Marcelo (hijo de mi hermano Tommy y Piera). A los 3 años de edad Marcelo fue diagnosticado con Autismo, algo que para nosotros fue muy doloroso pero que a la vez nos enseñó a amar de otra manera a nuestro Marcelo o Celo como le gusta que lo llamen.
Este año Marcelo tuvo algunos cambios preocupantes, bajó de peso, se veía desganado por ratos y comenzó a dormir más. Sin darnos cuenta algo estaba pasando dentro de su cuerpecito. El martes 23 de abril Marcelo vomitó, algo que no es usual por que aparentemente él estaba bien, el miércoles 24 llamaron del colegio por que Marcelo estaba decaído y con un poco de fiebre. Marcelo regresó al doctor. Esta vez tenía faringitis, además de los latidos de su corazón muy rápidos, por lo que le ordenaron exámenes de sangre. Estos fueron hechos el viernes 26.
El sábado 27, a las 7 de la mañana, la doctora llamó para pedir que lleven a Marcelo a emergencia del hospital por que sus exámenes de sangre arrojaban resultados alarmantes.
Después de más exámenes en el hospital, el doctor explicó que Marcelo tenía Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda y que había que actuar cuanto antes. En el momento que yo me entero solo pensé por que a él? Por qué? Si él es un niño, si tan solo tiene 7 añitos, si tiene autismo.
Luego de esa conversación con el doctor, Marcelo se quedó en el hospital, necesitaba transfusión de sangre y plaquetas. El día lunes 29 de abril, Marcelo fue operado para realizarle examen en la médula e insertarle un puerto en el pecho para por ahí hacerle la quimioterapia y sacarle sangre. Al día siguiente comenzó la quimioterapia.
Todo fue tan rápido que no teníamos tiempo de pensar y asimilar todo lo que estaba pasando con el bebé.
Marcelo se quedó hospitalizado por 12 días. La primera parte del tratamiento, una de las más intensas y que es llamada inducción, ha durado un mes y nos ha dado mucha esperanza, por que Marcelo está respondiendo tan bien al tratamiento que los doctores han considerado el cancer en remisión, lo que no significa que Marcelo está curado, solo que el tratamiento está funcionando hasta ahora como es esperado. Los doctores calculan más de tres anos de tratamiento.
Marcelo no puede ir al colegio por el momento por riesgo a recibir una infección o cualquier enfermedad, ya que su sistema inmunológico está muy débil por causa de la quimioterapia, y está recibiendo instrucción en la casa. Mi cuñada tuvo que dejar de trabajar para poder dedicarse en cuerpo y alma al bebé, para poder darle sus medicinas a sus horas, llevarlo al hospital para quimioterapias y chequeos y sobre todo tiene que estar atenta a cualquier cambio en su salud (infección, fiebre, tos severa) en Marcelo por que tendría que ser internado en el hospital de inmediato.
Marcelito está batallando como un campeón contra este cancer y todos nosotros le rogamos a Dios para que lo cure y vuelva a ser el mismo niño de siempre y nos siga alegrando a todos. Nunca pensamos pasar por esto y juro que es el dolor más grande que hemos podido sentir, algo inexplicable que nos cambió la vida a todos...
El seguro aun no ha dicho cuánto cubrirá de los gastos de hospitalización y tratamiento, por eso no tenemos una meta fija, pero por ahora solo uno de ellos esta trabajando y tienen muchos gatos que cubrir.
