*Due to the economic crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, Libreria Barco de Papel, needs your help to stay afloat.
The bookstore Libreria Barco de Papel opened its doors to the public in 2003. Today it stands as the last Spanish-language bookstore left in New York City. Its varied catalog includes new and used books from all types of genres and time periods. Its welcoming vibe has served as a meeting place for writers, artists and readers which have turned it into more than a meeting hub – a cultural hotspot and literary pilgrimage site.
Pursuant to New York’s Executive Order we have had to close our doors which has gravely affected the bookstore’s financial standing. The closure of the business has significantly reduced revenue and thrown the bookstore into an economic crisis.
We are calling on your contribution in order to keep serving our readers, clients, and families from our community which have come to rely on our bookstore for cultural activities and in many cases logistical support. We greatly appreciate any contribution you are able to make, no matter how small.
This small bookstore has been part of New York City’s latest cultural rise. We have supported numerous new voices in our city as well as established authors. As many of you know we regularly host book readings, art exhibits, poetry recitals, and community activities that promote interracial and cross-cultural reflection and dialogue through art and literature in our community.
We are located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York City – Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, Queens. Unfortunately, this area is also one of the hardest hit by the current Covid-19 pandemic assaulting our city. Please contribute if you can to help save this small bookstore which as mentioned above also serves as an important and needed community gathering site. We hope to be able to reopen soon and continue providing our hundreds of visitors the joy of reading and other cultural activities we regularly host. Thank you again for your support and please stay safe.
