The Tecomates Collective are a group of diverse people from Guatemala who came together in 2015 to unite our thoughts and energies in promoting processes of food sovereignty, comprehensive well-being and social equity. We seek to create ties between the urban and rural context to develop alternatives in nutrition, art and the construction of self-sustainable communities.
This project aims to help Guatemala’s people who are forced to take to the streets every day in search of basic economic and nutritional survival, by delivering nutritious food, hand in hand with educational materials and encouraging people to reduce the amount of waste the produce and the use of non-recyclable materials.
Wrapping Nutrition in a "Tamale"
The word tamal, which comes from the Nahuatl tamalli, and means wrapped, is one of the most important foods in Mesoamerican culture as its ingredients have a high nutritional value. In Guatemala it is valued highly and is traditionally consumed during celebrations and holidays, meaning it is an important ceremonial dish. Tamales are made in different ways: they can be sweet or savory, and have traditionally been made from a diversity of ancestral grains, particularly native varieties of corn. The sheaves of corn are used to wrap and cook the tamales and they can be seasoned with local herbs. “Travel tamales” are one of the many ways of preparing tamales in Guatemala and, weighing up to one kilo, they are designed for whole families.
Much of the corn that is currently used to make tamales is imported from Mexico as local varieties have been lost in Guatemala. Another problem is that more and more farmers prefer to plant hybrid varieties of corn over native seeds. The invasion of hybrids has contributed to the decreasing biodiversity and a loss of wild species such as amaranth, apazote, purslane, macuy, etc., which formed the basis of our ancestors diet for centuries thanks to their multiple nutritional and health benefits.
COVID-19 and the Food Crisis
Guatemala is facing a worsening crisis as the social and economic impacts of the global pandemic become clear. We know that one of the only possibilities for confronting this system of exploitation, dispossession and injustice is to engage in actions that nurture and educate, focusing on personal and collective transformation.
All current "measures" that have been taken to confront the pandemic are artificial solutions, or without a basis for effective implementation. Furthermore, the "health" and "medical care" programs are designed to make pharmaceutical companies richer. Medicine, dominates over access to nutritious food, weakening our bodies through biological control using medicine, contaminated-processed food and the media, who play a fundamental role in promoting fear and ignorance.
Little is said about strengthening the immune system. Only some self-organized communities and collective processes are proposing solutions by and for the people most affected. Our proposal aims to join forces with these initiatives through of co-creating and unifying efforts.
La Tamaleada...
Consists of the production and distribution of 450 kits with 900 tamales for at least 50 families located in the informal settlements that surround peripheral areas of the capital city.
Each kit includes:
- 1 Corn Tamale made with amaranth, wild herbs, spices and pigeon peas / broad beans chickpeas (savoury)
- 1 Corn Tamale made with amaranth, beans, spices and cocoa paste with mania-panela (sweet)
- Printed material with information on the different local flours used
- Educational material for young people and adults (informative leaflets on
sexuality, urban gardens, preventive health)
- Native seeds to start an urban garden
Each kit has a cost of €2.84
And providing one kit for one whole family costs only €25
Three kits for one family over the course of one month comes to €75

Tecomates somos un colectivo de personas diversas que desde 2015 unen pensamientos y energías para encaminar procesos de soberanía alimentaria, bienestar integral y equidad social. Buscamos generar lazos entre el contexto urbano y rural para desarrollar alternativas desde la nutrición, el arte y la construcción de comunidades autosostenibles.
La Tamaleada busca ayudar a las diferentes personas que a diario salen a las calles en busca de ayuda económica-alimenticia, con la entrega de alimentos nutritivos, de la mano con materiales educativos e incentivando a reducir el impacto de basura y el no uso de basura
Envolver nutrición en un “Tamal”
La voz tamal, que proviene del náhuatl tamalli, y significa envuelto, en la cultura mesoamericana es uno de los alimentos más importantes por sus ingredientes con alto valor nutricional. En Guatemala es muy reconocido y tradicionalmente se consume para celebraciones de días festivos, por lo que el tamal es considerado un platillo importante en la cultura. Son elaborados de diferentes formas, los hay dulces y salados, ancestralmente hechos de granos de diferentes tipos de maíz criollo, donde también se usan las hojas para su envoltura y algunas hierbas locales. Los tamales de viaje son una de las tantas formas en que se preparan en Guatemala y son pensados para familias ya que llegan a pesar el kilo.
Actualmente mucho del maíz que se usa para su elaboración es importando de México ya que en Guatemala se han perdido variedades. Otra problemática es que cada vez son más los agricultores que prefieren sembrar maíz hibrído en vez de maíz criollo. Este tipo de siembra ha contribuido a la pérdida de especies silvestres como el amaranto, apazote, verdolaga, macuy, etc, utilizadas por nuestros ancestros como base de su alimentación por sus múltiples beneficios para la salud.
COVID-19 y la crisis Alimentaria
Guatemala atraviesa una crisis que se agudiza y se vuelve transparente ante la pandemia. Sabemos que la única posibilidad de enfrentarnos al sistema de explotación, despojo e injusticia es salir y enfrentar con acciones que nutran y eduquen para la transformación personal y colectiva. Todas las “medidas” para actuales para enfrentar la pandemia son soluciones artificiales, o sin base para ejecutar, los programas de “salud” y “atención médica” están construidos para hacer más ricos a las farmacéuticas con medicina para debilitar nuestros cuerpos por medio del control biológico de la medicina, la comida contaminada-procesada y los medios de comunicación, quienes cumplen un papel fundamental para fomentar el miedo y la ignorancia.
Poco se habla de fortalecer el sistema inmunitario, sólo algunas comunidades auto-organizadas y procesos colectivos están proponiendo soluciones de la gente y para la gente. Nuestra propuesta busca sumarse a esta forma de co-crear y unificar esfuerzos.

Consiste en la elaboración, producción y distribución de 450 kits con 900 tamales para por lo menos 50 familias ubicadas en los alrededores de asentamientos y zonas perifericas de la ciudad capital.
Cada kit incluye:
● 1 Tamal de Maíz, amaranto, hiervas silvestres, especias y frijol gandúl/ haba/ o
garbanzos (salado)
● 1 Tamal de Maíz, amaranto, frijol, especias y pasta de cacao con mania-panela (dulce)
● Material impreso con información de las diferentes harinas locales usadas
● Material educativo para jóvenes y adultos (bifoliares informativos sobre temas de sexualidad, habilidades psicomotrices, huertos hurbanos, salud preventiva)
● Semillas criollas para comenzar una huerta
Cada kit tiene un coste de 2,84 €
Y proporcionar un kit para toda la familia cuesta solo 25 €
Tres kits para una familia en el transcurso de un mes cuesta 75 €
