LA Tenri Judo Dojo has sustained water damage – Help us rebuild our dojo
In mid-March this year, we decided to temporarily shut the doors of our historic dojo in consideration of Covid-19. When I came to clean us at the dojo on December 10, I noticed that there was water flowing out from under the entrance doors despite the fact that no one had been there for a few days. The changing room floor and even the tatami mats were wet. After careful inspection, I found that the water was leaking from the boiler. When I picked up the wet tatami mats, we discovered that the entire floor was completely inundated.
Los Angeles Tenri Judo Dojo was established by the Tenrikyo Church in 1962. For 58 years, it has endeavored to nurture the physical and mental health of the youth in the community and has contributed to maintaining security in the neighborhood. LA Tenri Judo has also trained multiple national- and world-level judoka and is well-known by those wishing to train with such elite athletes who visit from not only neighboring dojos, but also from other cities and countries.
In order to reopen the dojo in 2021 once the Covid restrictions are lifted, we will have to purchase new floorboards and tatami mats. The boiler needs to be replaced so people can take a shower after practice, and the decades-old shower and bathroom stalls need to be renovated to meet health and safety standards as well as be welcoming to our athletes and guests.
Los Angeles Tenri Judo is modeled after Tenri Judo in Japan. Tenri Judo produced three-time Olympic champion Tadahiro Nomura, Rio de Janeiro gold-medalist Shohei Ono and many other champions. Every 10 years, Los Angeles Tenri Judo Dojo invites world champions to its commemorative tournament. Our next tournament in 2022 is our 60th and we are hoping to invite 2019 world champions Shohei Ono and Joshiro Maruyama.
We would like to ask for your help and cooperation in making the 60th commemorative anniversary tournament a success. For our part, once the Covid restrictions are lifted, we will go back to training our judoka to a level befitting the name of our dojo. In the meantime, we need to repair the water damage sustained to our dojo in a timely manner. We are reaching out to our Tenri Judo community and friends to help raise the funds necessary through this GoFundMe campaign. We know times are hard for everyone, so if you can find corporate donors and other individuals who are willing to help us, we would greatly appreciate your help with reaching out to such entities.
Please be safe, everyone.
