Lana, Brendan and Cayla
Donation protected
My friend of 20 years, Lana, is a woman who is endlessly generous, but would never think to ask for help in her own hour of need.
Last year, nearly two years into the pandemic, Lana’s partner Kyle passed away suddenly, leaving behind two children: son Brendan (14) and toddler Cayla (2). Brendan lost his biological mother six years previous - Lana is now the sole surviving caregiver for two children at very different ages, with different needs and who are each processing a profound loss.

A talented performer, Lana’s income pre-pandemic (and before giving birth to Cayla) was mostly gigging. On any given week in Sydney she had between 3-5 bookings - she could be found fronting a party or event band, jazz ensemble, big band or tribute show, bringing people to their feet with anything from Ella Fitzgerald to ABBA, Fleetwood Mac to Janis Joplin. Performing is Lana’s lifeblood; it’s how she stays true to herself and brings joy to others.
The pandemic has devastated the live arts and hospitality industries, and rebuilding a regular circuit of gigs while solo parenting is a constant juggle. To make it all work, Lana and the kids are moving out of their apartment and in with family.
Despite the challenges she faces on all fronts, Lana’s mantra is that “life is good and every day is a gift”. She is fiercely resolved to be a beacon for the two children she now parents alone. Her tenacity and enduring optimism are incredible resources - but that does not mean she won’t need other support to face the road ahead. It is a long road.
Kyle’s passing at the height of pandemic lockdowns meant many of us couldn't put our arms around our dear friend in her darkest hour. Our hope is that with this page, we can create a community of support for this incredible woman and hold her family as they find their feet again. Can you help us?

Our goal is for Lana, Brendan and Cayla to have some savings to see them through life’s ongoing unpredictabilities. To ensure that, despite the immediate support of family, Lana has the autonomy and long-term stability to provide for the needs of her children - be it counselling, schooling extras or music classes. And that she herself can remain connected to community via performance, the source of her strength and resilience.
If you have the means to support this family as they rebuild their lives, we would be so grateful.
