The Heart of Lance’s Journey
Donation protected
Holland native Lance Mokma was born with a congenital heart
defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) that causes the
left side of the heart not to develop properly. At 22 months old he had
an open heart surgery called a Fontan procedure in an attempt to
reconstruct his heart and allow him a chance to live into adulthood.
Lance's fontan held up well and gave him many more years than
expected but unfortunately started failing while he was in college.
In March 2021, Lance and his wife Sarah moved to Philadelphia in order for Lance to be listed for dual organ heart and liver transplant. He was admitted to the hospital on October 13 long term until transplant. After over 8 months of waiting in the hospital for his transplants, Lance officially got the call on June 16 and had a heart and liver transplant that same day. It is one of the most complex surgeries a human being can undergo and unfortunately, Lance's body and new organs suffered greatly and he had multiple complications. At the time of this going to print, Lance is in critical condition, on ECMO, dialysis, a heart balloon pump, and numerous medications to keep his blood pressures up. Lance unfortunately suffered from severely decreased blood flow to his legs and has a high probability of having a non-functioning left leg once he wakes up. The Mokma's would greatly appreciate any support as medical bills for a long term admission, heart and liver transplant, and what is sure to be a grueling recovery process are extensive. Lance and Sarah have a CaringBridge webpage should you wish to periodically receive updates or have interest in hearing their entire story. www.caringbridge.org/visit/lancemokma
