Landy was an outstanding high school athlete at Washington High School (WHS) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in several sports including football, track and field, and wrestling.  In track and field, Landy was a two-time state and conference champion in the long jump, as well as winning the event at Drake Relays in 1968.  Landy held the long jump conference record of over 23' for more than twenty years.  His achievements in sports culminated in being inducted into the  WHS Hall of Fame and at the induction ceremony was called, "one of Washington's all-time best athletes."

Landy continued wrestling at the University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO) and was part of the 1970 NAIA Championship Wrestling Team that was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.  He was scheduled to be inducted as an individual to UNO's Hall of Fame in 2020, but the ceremony was postponed due to the Covid virus.

Landy is survived by five children, Deatra (Doug) Waller-Norem, Landy Waller IV, Lydale Waller, Adrian Arrington, and LaNeisha Waller, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by two sisters, Paulette (James) Clark, and Delores Davis, a brother, Olen (Lisa) Gibson, and sister-in-law, Lois Becicka.  Landy was preceded in death by his parents Magnolia (Hurst) Waller, Landy Gordon Waller II, and brothers Karl Waller, and Ralph Becicka.

Special acknowledgement to two of Landy's very dear friends, Lawrence (JoeRob) Robinson, and Dr. Ruben Damous, who were like brothers to him.  Thank you to his church families at Pilgram Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, and Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
