LaneyVisor: rapidly made faceshields for doctors
Our Goal: Produce and distribute 10,000 face shields for local healthcare workers.
The Bay Area is experiencing a massive shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using rapid-prototyping, digital fabrication techniques available to students at the Laney College FabLab, we have created a face shield design for our local healthcare workers. With the help of Wright Engineered Plastics , your donation will be used to manufacture 10,000 face shields to protect those working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis.
Why the LaneyVisor?
Designed specifically to meet the needs of healthcare workers
Created by and for our local community
Not for profit
Rapidly-produced
Affordable
Proven record of success

What will your donation be used for?
Each LaneyVisor will cost $2.50 to manufacture, package, and distribute. Your donation goes directly towards the acquisition and manufacturing of:
Injection molded plastic headbands manufactured by Wright Engineered Plastics from Santa Rosa, Ca
Die cut PET visors
#19 non latex bands
Packaging supplies
All other project management and labor is being donated by the Laney FabLab team and our community of volunteers.
What will you do if demand in the Bay Area flattens or if you raise more than $25,000?
Demand may decline in the Bay Area, but it will likely increase in other parts of the globe. We are committed to distributing the LaneyVisor to any part of the world that needs them. If we raise more than $25,000, that money will go to producing more LaneyVisors for Bay Area facilities or other facilities around the world.
Our First Success: We have already delivered 500 face shields to healthcare workers.
In March, we spent two weeks developing the LaneyShield, our first version of the face shield. We have successfully produced and delivered 500 LaneyShields to Alameda Health System (Highland Hospital and Alameda Hospital), as well as to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.
Check out this article in Hoodline for updates on we and other maker spaces are doing!
Now we need to produce another 10,000 shields by May, 2020.
Since the release of the LaneyShield, we have continued developing its design to improve efficiency and practicality. Our newest version of the shield, the LaneyVisor, improves on the LaneyShield in two specific ways:
1.The LaneyVisor is more easily sanitized and so it can be used more than once.
2. The LaneyVisor can be manufactured and assembled much faster than the LaneyShield.

Why we need your help:
In order to mass produce the LaneyVisor, we need to raise $25,000 to purchase materials and cover manufacturing costs. That’s where you come in. If you are able, please consider donating to help keep our healthcare workers safe. Thank you!
