It has taken me awhile to accept the reality that my dad, Larry Gilliland, is no longer here. Most days I still can’t believe that it is true. My dad battled many ailments in his life, but his fight with pulmonary fibrosis came to an end on 8/21/20. On 9/11/20, his 69th birthday, loved ones and friends came together to celebrate his life.
My dad was known for his sarcastic humor, ability to construct anything, his passion for books, computers, science, and astrophysics. You would always see him wearing his bucket hats, drinking his diet Pepsi’s straight out of the bottle, and his pants dirty from working on something.
Growing up, I remember my dad always building something, whether a home renovation in Beverly Hills or a swing for me to hang on our porch. Anytime I needed help with an essay or school project, my dad was the man to go to for help. He was a man who could figure anything out if you asked him, and to this day I am convinced he is one of the most intelligent men I will ever have the opportunity to know. As I navigated through my young adult years, he helped guide me through uncertain times and gave me the confidence and strength to live my life in my own unique way.
My dad was a man who would rarely burden anyone else with his own problems. He was someone who ultimately wanted to give to others and be of service to them. He had so little, but would give the shirt off his back. In the end, he wanted to be remembered as someone who cared for others.
My dad is survived by my mother, Patsy Gilliland. She was his full-time care taker, his support, his partner in this life. The funds raised will go directly to my mom to help alleviate the financial burden of my dad’s funeral service as well as costs incurred in his final days of life. My mom has dedicated her life to caring for others, please help me by supporting her through this next chapter.
