Latitude 49: Investing In The Future

Tax deductible
After a wildly successful inaugural season of the Sound Atlas Festival, which brought together musicians from across North America for a powerful time of collaboration, exploration, and artistry, Latitude 49 is ready to focus our efforts on investing in the future. And we need your help!

We are specifically targeting three exciting initiatives: 1) BRAND NEW Children's Programming at Sound Atlas 2024, 2) A VIDEO and AUDIO release of music by Shulamit Ran, and 3) our FIRST-EVER Student Residency, happening at Sound Atlas 2024.

Brand New Children's Programming

Latitude 49 is delighted to collaborate with Contemporary Calgary in curating an engaging and interactive children's event that delves into the symbiotic relationship between visual art and music. This unique experience aims to cultivate an awareness and appreciation for the expressive tools inherent in both mediums, including color, space, line, shape, direction, and evocation, empowering students to embrace their innate artistic expression. Participants will explore instances where art inspires music and vice versa. The culminating project of the event will be the creation of graphic notations by the participating children, interpreted and performed by members of Latitude 49. We invite you to join us for an enlightening and immersive experience that promises to broaden the horizons of young minds while celebrating the interconnectedness of artistic expression.

Video and Audio Recording Project: Shulamit Ran's "Birkat Haderekh"

We are knee-deep in the recording and production process for a brand new video and audio release from Pulitzer Prize-winning Israeli-American composer Shulamit Ran. Ran is an important compositional voice whose music deserves the most careful, intentional, artistic codification. Fot that reason, we are working with Ann Arbor's Sly Pup Productions to create the most sensitive, transcendent recording possible of "Birkat Haderekh: Blessing for the Road 2." This recording will be an important addition to the repertoire that celebrates one of the world's great musical voices.

First-Ever Student Residency at Sound Atlas 2024

The upcoming Sound Atlas Festival is set to showcase a specially curated resident ensemble, mirroring the instrumentation of Latitude 49. As a part of this unique musical experience, students will have the exceptional opportunity to take center stage during a Sound Atlas concert. Their participation involves the preparation of a selected piece from our repertoire and the interpretation of a brief new composition crafted by a chosen resident composer.

Latitude 49 is committed to nurturing the talents of these students, providing essential support in the form of rehearsal space, personalized coachings, and an array of online workshops leading up to the event. These workshops will focus on critical skills such as collaboration with living composers and the nuanced art of score study, enriching the students' understanding and appreciation of contemporary music. In addition to musical development, students will gain firsthand insights into the intricate workings of a festival. Volunteer opportunities and behind-the-scenes experiences will offer them a comprehensive understanding of the logistical and artistic facets of running a successful event.

We need YOUR help and partnership as we invest in the future! Any donation, large or small, will be used exclusively to support these three initiatives. Our fundraising goal is honorarily set at $10,000, and we know with your help we can get there, together. Donors will be publicly acknowledged in our festival program and welcomed into our extended family, and receive updates and exclusive festival news in advance! We love you and we love sharing new music with you. Thank you for all you do to support our initiatives and bring new music to life!
