Latria's Caregiver/Residency Fund

Great news:
I, along with Elise Anderson, was chosen to be a Steve Kemp Writer-in-Residence. It is my first writing residency. It takes places in the spring in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which dovetails beautifully with my work.

Not-so-great news:
I can’t afford to go. For the last 6+ months I’ve been the sole caregiver for my mom, and in order to take the residency, I have to be able to afford for someone to care for her in my stead.

In order to get something you want, sometimes you have to try something you’ve never done before. So I’m asking for your support.  I’ve started a GoFundMe to raise the money hire a caregiver and offset the costs of me taking this opportunity.

Even if I’m unable to attend this residency, funds raised will give me the opportunity to hire a caregiver so that I can have a bit of self created space to write and research so that I can get to the next story.

Even if you can’t donate, a share would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Latria

F.A.Q:

What would this residency do for you? How does the community benefit?

I want to learn more about what’s at stake for our region’s flora and fauna, and find a way to get that information out to the general public.

When I wrote the “We’re Here, You Just Don’t See Us” essay for Outside Magazine, I was transparent about to of the major things that keep people of color from getting outdoors: time and money. I realize if I am gonna call out the systemic and circumstantial issues that people of color face in the outdoors, I am going to have to do my part to educate others and keep the conversation going. This residency is a pretty big chance to do that.

I see it as part of my mission to bring the great outdoors to those curious about them. I want to do that through memorable photographs, interesting interviews and sharp storytelling. All of that takes time.

This residency would give me time to read, write, and do some research, which I’ve sorely missed doing for almost a year.

I have some story hunches, and I’m particularly interested in the indigenous community that was pushed out in order to create the park.

Why are you interested in the Great Smoky Mountains?

As a child when my parents drove between Nashville, TN to the homeplace in SC, we drove past the park and I never got to go inside. This is my chance to get a behind the scenes look at how the park works.

This is a lot of money you’re asking for.

I know. Unfortunately medical care is expensive. I did some math when I came up with this figure. Costs include my transportation, my mother’s transportation to her appointments, an in-home caregiver and other fringe costs.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me and I’ll do my best to answer them.
