Launch Steelman Studio with Stephen Hawkins

I grew up an Evangelical Christian Republican from the South and in my twenties, I became an atheist, a Democrat and a professional activist in New York City. Today I'm neither a Republican nor an activist -- but I have learned a lot.

I channeled that experience into my research and co-authored what is likely the most referenced study on political polarization in the United States, Hidden Tribes (2018). My work been cited by Fortune 100 CEOs, by Republican and Democrat Presidential candidates, and it's been featured on both The Joe Rogan podcast and on the front page of the New York Times.

I wrote my master's thesis on the impact of political comedy at the Harvard School of Government, where I won the talent show for my standup and was selected to be my class's graduation speaker.

Today, I'm worried about the rise in political dysfunction and hostility. I think our divided country would benefit from conversations defined by genuine curiosity, greater humility, and lots of laughter. With a commitment to empathy and to evidence, I aim to be a voice for the Exhausted Majority, one that informs, entertains and gives reasons for hope.
