Laura's recovery from Miller Fisher (GBS)
Donation protected
In May 2019, my wife had a chest infection. She started to get double vision, lost her balance, slurring her speech and within 5 days she was paralyzed from head to toe. She was put on a ventilator to assist her breathing and was kept medically sedated to keep her alive. She was diagnosed with a condition call Miller Fisher Syndrome (a variant of Guillain Barre Syndrome) a condition which causes your immune system to attack your nervous system.

Laura spent 120 days in ICU/HDU unit at East Surrey Hospital and was then transferred to the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disabilities for rehabilitation where she is currently. She is making good progress but is still unable to care for herself and has to be moved around in a wheelchair. She currently needs two full-time carers. Her stay ends on 24th March 2020 and at this point she will either be transferred to a level 2 facility or home into our care. We are still waiting to see if a place is available and if so it will only be for 6-8 weeks. Either way at some point, she will be home and will require care and physio for an unknown length of time (possibly many years) to help her continue to get better and we will have to cover the costs of this.
At the time Laura became ill, our daughter, Ella was only 9 months old. She has been an absolute angel and had to deal with not having her mummy around. She has been looked after by myself and her grandparents and has become so adaptable during this journey.
Both Laura and I feel bad asking for help but the last year has been hard emotionally, physically and financially and without our families we would not have managed this far. We are just asking for financial help to aid Laura's continued recovery, hopefully back to a normal family life. I know that many of you have asked repeatedly if there is anything you can do to help; and your love and support has helped us through so far. If you can donate anything to help with Laura's recovery, we would be extremely grateful. Love Laura, James, Ella & Wispa
