Lauren Mannie kidney transplant expenses

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Shelly Avila, and I'm trying to raise money for my daughter, Lauren, who has end-stage kidney disease and is waiting to get a kidney transplant. She is currently preparing for surgery to place a catheter in her abdomen to start PD dialysis treatment.

Lauren is only 33 years old but has already had a lifetime of pain and medical trauma. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2003 at age 15. She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2019 and was told she would need dialysis within a year. Her health declined quickly, and she was hospitalized multiple times with kidney infections, sepsis, and other medical conditions. All of this led to acute kidney injuries and a further decline in her kidneys' ability to function.

Lauren is a FIGHTER. 2020 rolled around, and she did NOT need dialysis. Her kidney function was down to 30%, but she continued to fight to stay off dialysis.

Because her kidneys were not doing their job, Lauren has been hospitalized every month since 2021 with kidney infections, pancreatitis, sepsis, and dehydration.
Unfortunately, because of these ongoing issues, her diabetes suffered as well. Her kidneys could not bounce back, and she was told it was time for dialysis.

Lauren has not been able to work since 2019. She deals with fatigue, dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, memory loss, and insomnia; Lauren also has to get iron infusions quarterly for extreme anemia.

Lauren and her husband, Ryan, have been living on one income. They get monthly food assistance - which helps, but not enough. Their financial and medical situation is taking a toll on them. She has applied for Social Security benefits and has been denied twice. She picks up neighborhood pet-sitting jobs when she can. Her father and I try to give them money for food, gas, and medical bills, but we cannot provide much since we are retired and on a fixed income. We are raising money for the following expenses:

  • Hospital bills (past & future). Transplant costs are enormous!
  • Gas money for doctor's appointments and frequent testing and bloodwork. The transplant team is in S.F. - 170 miles round trip.
  • Dialysis medical equipment co-pay
  • Doctors' co-pay
  • Medications
  • Anti-rejection medications (kidney transplant)
  • Therapy is required for kidney transplant patients.

Any help you can offer -- whether it is contributing or helping to spread the word of our fundraising effort -- would be deeply appreciated by me, Lauren, and our whole family. We love our girl.
