Michaela Schmidt bed&bath interior goal UPDATE

My name is Laurie Schmidt, and this is our story.

Michaela has been housesitting in Kyle but needs to move home by the end of March 30th because the owner of the home is moving back. However, we need to finish out a bedroom and bathroom of the addition for proper living space. The space is dried in but not fully compete we have a few materials and furniture but need additional funds and of labor to finish the 576 sf. space. We are estimating an additional $15-20,000 to complete this room for Michaela and her proper privacy.

My husband of 28 years, JP Schmidt, was a US Army veteran, Texas A&M graduate, an avid woodworker, and an active member of the Wimberley building and remodeling community from 1995-2010.  He always had a special place in his heart for the elderly, especially the widows in the community.  He truly believed in living out the scripture verses of taking care of widows (1 Timothy 5:3; James 1:27 NIV).  He would often volunteer his time and materials when he could to help those on a limited or fixed income with home repairs and maintenance.  When he could not respond to all the requests for assistance, he went to our church, Wimberley First Baptist Church, to involve some of the retired men that had trade skills as well as a heart for serving people.  The Carpenter’s Helpers (TCH) ministry outreach was officially started shortly after that.

In 2009, JP was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and went through surgery, chemo, and radiation.  Shockingly, he passed away a short 10 months later in 2010 at age 54. At the time, I was homeschooling our daughter, Michaela, but was only able to continue for one more year before she had to enter public school.  Michaela went on to graduate with honors from Texas State University in the summer of 2019.  Then COVID 19 hit. During early 2020, Michaela lost all three of her jobs.  I was grateful to take a job as an Amazon delivery driver.  We were offered a variance option on our mortgage to help us through COVID, but were assured that our bank would work with us to catch up on our back payments in February 2021.  I was shocked to be informed on January 22nd that the only option for us was to get the payments current or have a short sale.  This news was totally unexpected, and we were obviously unprepared for that.

Before JP passed away, he built an ADA accessible apartment addition on to our house for my mother to come live with us, since she was over three hours away and wheelchair bound from a stroke.  After JP passed away, everything stalled on the building project at our house.  The addition was dried in, but there were no funds to finish any of it out.  Unfortunately, my mother passed away three years later in 2013.

All in all, we are at a point that we need to reach out to others in the hopes that they can help us save our home and all we have fought for preserving.

Would you prayerfully consider how you may be involved to support us, primarily with our mortgage payments so we don’t risk losing our home at the end of February.  We have until February 26, 2021 to bring our mortgage current with a total payment of $17,435 to have no remaining balance due and not be in foreclosure status with Chase Bank. (PAYMENT RAISED, bless y’all)

Our family has experienced years of emotional turmoil and grief of the loss of six family members over a six-year period of time. Therefore, we are attempting to do whatever we can to not continue to lose our home.

Please know that Michaela and I will be “paying this forward” to others in need, just as we are asking others to reach out to help us in our time of need through this personal and financial crisis.

Thank you and God Bless.
