GUATEMALA - School for the Deaf
Donation protected
Cooper and I will be traveling to Guatemala in March, and have arranged to volunteer for a week at LAVOSI - an independent school for the deaf just outside the city of Antigua.
Since LAVOSI is a private organization, it does not receive any sort of governmental support or funding. Alvaro De Leon, a deaf Guatemalan who was instrumental in the founding of the school only five short years ago, serves as both a teacher and as the head administrator. All instruction is delivered in Guatemalan Sign Language, and for the majority of the student population – LAVOSI is their only opportunity to obtain an education.
I connected with Alvaro via Skype, and we spoke about what supplies and supports would be most helpful to their mission. School items such as pencils, markers, tape, chalk, notebooks, etc are a constant necessity. The school’s kitchen is in desperate need of renovation and equipment. LAVOSI would also like to hire additional instructional staff to serve their growing enrollment.
I am asking you - friends/family/community - if you would be willing to make a small donation to help LAVOSI. All monies collected will be of great benefit for these deaf children and their futures.
Thank you so much for your generosity!
And I promise I will post pictures of our time at LAVOSI!
