This is a historic election in our nation's history and I am so honored to have been selected by the Bernie Sanders Campaign to serve as their Washington State representative on the DNC Standing Platform Committee. I join Deborah Parker (who was appointed the the Drafting Committee in May) as the only two DNC Platform Committee Members appointed by the Bernie Campaign from Washington State. I look forward to helping create the most progressive party platform in history. I am particularly motivated to take a strong stand to help small and mid-sized family farms and to increase the resources available for young people who choose farming as a career path so that they can more easily break into farming and be successful. As a country we are facing an unprecedented crisis in our food system. The average age of farmers in the U.S. is 58 years old. This is the highest this number has ever been. Over the next 20 years 400 million acres of farmland will change hands. Who will it be handed to? This is a national crisis and a complex issue with many layers. We need as a party to bring this issue to the national conversation and I am grateful for this incredible opportunity to do just that.
Participating on the Platform Committee will require a lot of work in the next month. It will also require that I attend the following:
1) Southeast Platform Committee Meeting
Orlando, FL July 8-10
2) Democratic National Convention (DNC)
Philadelphia, PA July 25-29
Due to the fully immersed nature of the work involved (16+ hour days) it is essential that I stay at accommodations chosen by the convention. This, combined with airfare and other travel and convention costs adds up to quite a hefty sum.
I have already booked all of my accommodations and my airfare. I'm estimating the Orlando trip will cost a total of $1500 and the Philly trip will cost around $4500, for a total of $6000 (the Democratic Party gave an estimate of $5000 for the DNC alone, but I think it will be slightly less).
I am asking for help from you all to help cover these costs. I am incredibly grateful for all of the support I have already received in so many ways to get here and I am honored for the opportunity to be a voice for all of you as we craft a historic platform that will shape our nation's future.
