On Sunday, March 12, my stepdad Bill went to the ER for what we thought might an ulcer or something relatively minor. But, our lives turned upside down that day. After a CT scan, an emergency surgery was scheduled to remove a large Stage 2, cancerous mass from his colon. Ultimately, his entire colon was removed. During a week of critical care post surgery, Bill had a bout with atrial fibrillation
(A-Fib), a pulmonary embolism, and 3 "mini" strokes. He was in the hospital for another 2 weeks before Bill was ready to be moved to a physical therapy facility.
My stepdad has always been larger than life, but right now, it's a struggle to walk 20 steps - the effort wipes him out. The wound care from the surgery and physical recovery from the strokes (he lost some left side mobility) are top priorities now. He's going to be in a rehabilitation hospital for physical therapy for the remainder of this week for sure, but he needs to stay for at least another week of treament and physical therapy if we can afford it.
The last few weeks are a blur to say the least.
But what isn't blurry AT ALL are the wonderful people in our lives and in our community that have blessed my family with love, prayers, encouragement, and food! While that has truly lifted our spirits, some very real costs are bringing reality back with a heavy hand. So I'm starting this GoFundMe to help raise funds for Bill. My mom has received $20k in bills so far and he's not even home yet. There's still a long road to travel. I'm hoping that together, we can ease the burden for them.
Words cannot possibly express my sincere thanks for any help you can provide.
