We Need YOU:  A call to action to support inclusive theatre in the UK

At Dead Good Theatre, we tell stories that reflect the world we live in. This is demonstrated throughout our philosophy, artistic approach and company members, who hail from all walks of life. Because representation matters.

Our new play LEAVING is a great example of the kind of work we hope to continue making. Written so that each character can be played by anyone, whatever gender, race, sexuality or age, LEAVING is piece of work that is truly open to the most inclusive of casts - including ours. We're ready to start rehearsals for a five show run of LEAVING at The Bunker , London.

But to make it happen, we need your support.

What's the big idea?

As a company, we showcase new material, and lesser known work, with the main focus being ultimately on fresh, new writing. The company's aim is to develop work from within, utilising the incredible breadth of talent our creatives have.  The work we make is issue-led. We breathe new life into current/ongoing social and political issues, showing how both national and international concerns can impact the individual(s) in society as they go about their every day life.

LEAVING is our company's full length debut...

"Every now and then I think about just getting up and walking – No, running, out of here. Away from this. And the truth is, every now and then, I actually do. I get up, I walk out of the front door and I just run. And I run and I run ‘til my lungs burn and my breath falls short... And everything’s a blur.

And it’s winter so I’m freezing half to death. Or it’s summer so sweat’s dripping down my face and into my eyes as I run and run and run."

LEAVING is "a striking provocation of a play" that explores the lives of people dealing with the impact of having to leave something or someone.  Amongst 23 short scenes and monologues, that may somehow feel connected, we meet an astronaut about to embark on their first mission, an abused spouse who finally decides to leave their relationship, an immigrant forced to part ways with their partner as they enter a deportation facility, a group of factory workers planning a walk out and a suicidal celebrity contemplating the hereafter. Love and violence, hopes and dreams and parents and children trickle through the narrative as the play reflects on how we so often must disentangle ourselves from what we know, in the hope of something better.
