Lee's 100,000 Steps for The Florrie
Hi, my name is Lee Hughes, and on 28th February, I’m taking on the challenge of walking 100,000 steps in one day—around 50 miles—to raise funds for The Florrie Preservation Campaign. This isn’t just about walking; it’s about giving back to the place and people who have helped me turn my life around.
My Story:
For years, I’ve battled with depression. It started when I lost both my mum and dad, and things got even harder in June 2024 when my relationship of 12 years ended. I have an amazing, beautiful daughter, but at that time, I felt completely lost. I reached a point where I saw no other way out and attempted to take my own life.
Thankfully, I was taken to the Royal Hospital, where they not only saved me but also set me on a new path toward recovery. I was offered support from James’s Place on Catherine Street, where I finally had the chance to open up and talk about the struggles I had bottled up for so long. At first, I felt like a coward for not reaching out sooner, but I now know that asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do.
As part of my recovery, I was introduced to The Florrie—a community space in Liverpool that runs an incredible men’s wellbeing group called Walk Florrie. From the moment I walked through the doors, Tony and the rest of the group welcomed me with open arms. Walk Florrie isn’t just about walking; it’s about giving men a safe space to talk, connect, and support each other. The group has been life-changing for me, and the friendships I’ve built there have helped me through some of my darkest days.
Why This Challenge Matters:
If it weren’t for the support of The Florrie, James’s Place, and the Royal Hospital, I wouldn’t be here today. That’s why I’m taking on this challenge—to give back and help raise money to keep The Florrie running so it can continue to support people like me.
The Florrie is a vital part of Liverpool’s L8 community. It’s more than just a building—it’s a place where people find hope, support, and a sense of belonging. But to keep it going, we need your help.
How You Can Support:
I’m asking for your support to help me reach my fundraising goal. Please, if you can afford to donate, any amount—big or small—will make a difference. Every penny raised will go toward preserving The Florrie so it can continue helping others in need.
If you’re not in a position to donate, you can still support me by sharing my story. The more people who hear about The Florrie and the incredible work they do, the more lives we can help change.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. And to anyone struggling—please, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. It works, and it can change your life just like it changed mine.
