Leg surgery for Buju!
Donation protected
Hello!
This cute little guy is Buju. He is a 5 or 6 week old Quaker parrot/Monk Parakeet. He is still being hand fed and is growing perfectly. I had adopted him March 25th from a shady breeder in Dayton, OH who did NOT inform me that Buju had a bad leg. His right leg is completely twisted backwards so his foot is unable to be used.
When I adopted Buju i met the breeder in a mutual public area so I could pick Buju up. When I got there he advised me to not open his carrier so that the carrier could retain as much heat as possible for the ride home. He was just a ball of white fluff at that point so it seemed like a valid reason. Though my daughter mentioned the leg in the car on the way home, the breeder had already pulled off. I didn't inspect him until we got home. Honestly I'm glad I got him because I'm not sure what his fate would have been if I hadn't. He's such a sweet baby ❤️
I've taken Buju to 2 vet clinics in the 2 weeks I've had him. The 1st advised me that most people euthanize at a young age. I am not new to birds and I saw no reason at all that he needed to be euthanized. So I went home and researched everything needed to make a handicapped birds life easier. I purchased a short and wide cage with ramps that i wrapped in vet tape. I purchased bedding for the bottom. After a couple days i decided to make an appointment at Medvet to get a 2nd opinion. They said it appears that he either broke his leg when he was very tiny or he was born this way and it has grown incorrectly.
Medvet suggested I get xrays for a more concrete treatment plan. The x-rays alone are about $400. I have paid $78 at the 1st vet and $98 at medvet so far. I opted to hold off om xrays for a bit to see what I can come up with. The Vet tech suggested I make a gofundme so here I am. Given that I did not know I was adopting a handicapped bird that would need a fairly complex leg surgery, I was not prepared financially. If you are able to chip in any amount or share this would be greatly appreciated! You can also donate directly to medvet for patient ID 1106989.
The Vet tech said surgery would greatly improve his quality of life BUT that birds are great at adapting to handicaps and he would likely be okay if left as is. I would like to see what I can do to make his life easier but I need help!
