Legal Help for Chanel Hines

Donation protected
On Tuesday November 3rd, Chanel Hines, a Black trans woman, was shot by her parole officer in Canandaigua, NY. According to witnesses, Chanel was backing away from her PO in her car when he shot seven times through the windshield. Chanel took three bullets to the chest. She received no medical treatment for an hour and half, just blocks from the hospital.

Chanel’s family is still struggling to get details about her condition but do know that she is stable, albeit with a collapsed lung, following emergency surgery. No visitors are permitted and her mother has been allowed only one 5-minute phone call with her daughter since the shooting. Chanel is fighting for her life while the forces of the state are working to cover up the truth of the unprovoked, violent attack she suffered at the hands of her own parole officer. She needs mental health care and access to her loving family.

Chanel was known to her parole officer. He knew that she does not have a violent history. Her mother describes Chanel as gentle and sensitive. This racist, transphobic attack was utterly unwarranted and Chanel deserves justice and support.

Funds are urgently needed to pay for a criminal attorney so Chanel’s mother will finally be able to speak to her and provide the critical emotional support her daughter so desperately needs.  Please contribute what you can to support this member of our community.

This fundraiser is organized by the Geneva Women's Assembly in conjunction with Chanel's family.
