Lehigh Acres Middle Schools Crossfit
Donation protected
After leaving Monterey I began working at Lehigh Acres Middle School, a division 1 school in Lee County, coaching their CrossFit Program. LAMS was the first school in the state of Florida to become a CrossFit affiliate. LAMS CrossFit is quickly growing in demand, while our equipment is still minimal and limits us tremendously. The course is offered as an elective and does NOT have any type of budget, all equipment was acquired through donation, Donors Choose grants or purchased by Coach McDowell and myself. Currently we have:
3 Bars
3 Sets of 10's
6 boxes
1- 3 person pull up station
2 moveable squat racks
15 Wallball
15 Ab Mats
Various KB, DB and Big plastic jump ropes
4 off brand rowers (2 broken)
4 Off brand Assault Bike (arms do not stay attached)
The kids in our school come from various backgrounds and many have the ability to excel in sports through high school and into college, but come from low socio-economic backgrounds and school may be the only place where they can experience these possibilities. Our goal is to help those students reach their full potential as well as show other students how building healthy habits and how being active can have a long lasting impact. As CrossFitters we all remember our 1st WOD, every PR and the reason we "drank the Kool-Aid," I want our students to have that same experience.
This past year we had the opportunity to take our kids to a local box, CrossFit 239, for an afternoon. Having access to a fully equipped gym allowed each student to have their own bar, weights, and spot on the pull up rig. Due to CrossFit 239 being generous enough to open their doors to us, we were able to really work technique and truly give the students the feeling of working as a community/ class all at once.
Our long term goal, after building our equipment is to fix up an old building the school currently uses as a storage facility and make it our "LAMS Crossfit Box.' If we can move our program out of the gymnasium and into this other space, then we can extend our program to a full time elective, which will allow us to reach more students, many of whom are currently placed on a waiting list.
With your support our goal is to be able to purchase the following equipment:
15lb, 25lb, 35lb Bars
Various weight plates
Collars for all bars
moveable squat racks
Slam Balls
Speed ropes
Wall mounted Pull up rig
Reliable Rowers and Bikes
Thank you for considering donating to our LAMS CrossFit team, we look forward to updating you with our improvements this coming school year. We are also happy to accept any equipment in good condition that you no longer have a use for!
Thank you,
Kimberly McCarver
