About Leonard Lloyd Root:

Len was extremely strong in his faith of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and a lifelong aviator since getting his pilot's license at the age of 16. He was the pilot of the Texas Raiders B-17 and a 29+ year-long member of the Commemorative Air Force's Gulf Coast Wing. An American Airlines pilot for 30+ years until his retirement last year and, most recently, a member of the JSX airline family.

Len was a dedicated husband, a loving father to his three daughters, stepdaughter and stepson. He was also an all-around amazing grandfather to his 12 grandchildren, frequently taking them up for flights. He was always quick with a corny Dad joke, showed God's love to all around him, and would light up a room when he walked in.

Len was the most friendly, talkative, charming guy. He never knew a stranger. His retirement party from American Airlines was a year ago, almost to the day, and it was overwhelming how many people showed up for him. And that wasn’t even half. He impacted so many lives. We are so proud. He loved that plane. He loved his family. He loved the Lord. He is leaving behind a huge legacy. We are not ready to say goodbye. Dad, we love you with all our hearts. We are shattered. Len will be sorely missed and can never be replaced.

We ask for prayers for our family and everyone that Len touched during his amazing life who are feeling his loss. We are comforted to know that he is now soaring with the angels.

High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew –
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
