Kristin's Story
So, I became his medical foster in December 2020 and fully adopted him in November 2021.
It is with an extremely heavy heart that I am here to update everyone that we had to make the hardest decision yesterday to end Trap's suffering. I will try to do the best I can with this update, but I am shattered. AMC always called between 9-11am for check ups. Yesterday when I got the call at 7:30am, my heart sank. I got the call that he made a turn for the worst. They had been treating his ulcer (assumed to come from meds he wasn't strong enough to handle) and Gl issues, but he was not improving as they hoped. They called because he actually had a major diarrhea episode that put his body into shock. At that time they were going to get him on IV to increase his blood volume, and that I should come see him at 1pm for visitation. When we were leaving to visit. We got another call. They had done an ultrasound and determined that his ulcer had ruptured. So now he had a septic abdomen and septic hip. She told me that even in healthy dogs, there's a 50-50 chance that he will not pull through and given his condition already, his chances were pretty grave. At this point we have almost 2 hours of a drive and we were told they would try to keep him alive until we got there because he was in such bad shape. Well, my strong strong boy held on for us. When we got there, there was no movement on his end, and what seemed like no acknowledgement of us being there. The Dr came to us and said he knows where there because his heart rate steadied and calmed. We then had one moment where his eye seemed to hold open and try to focus, he knew we were there with him comforting him, and he let his body go. The wonderful ICU dr came and helped him drift off to his forever sleep comfortably. The void I feel is so great and so loud, the aching in my heart is almost too much at times. He truly was the sweetest most loving boy with the best temperament. He truly saved me when he came into my life.
Previously, He has had a hip replacement that failed in January 2021 due to a MRSA infection. They then had to remove the implant and did an FHO to remove the femoral head on his femur. From the x-rays, it looks as though his femur may have been fractured during that surgery, so they put a plate and wrapped his femur in wiring with about 5 screws in it. That was done in April 2021.
Ever since, we have had issues. He has been in and out of the vet for multiple ear infections and other random infections/flare-ups. He then scratched his eye because of an ear infection, which ruptured, so he had his emergency eye removal surgery in the summer of 2023. He also had emergency bladder stone surgery due to a major infection that caused bladder stones, which caused him to stop urinating in February 2024. Now, he needs to get the hardware from his fracture removed because of this infection. We're unsure what type of infection it is at this time. He’s still in bad shape, so he needs to stay in ICU another day, and they increased the quote to 15k. They had to place a tube from his nose to his stomach because he is still having bad GI issues, and they have to do another blood transfusion.
We are fundraising to cover the medical expenses for his treatments and surgeries.
