Hello, my name is Makaylea, the daughter of Bruce Merrill. My father passed away on November 16, 2023. When he passed, he did not have a life insurance policy. My father was a character that words could not describe, but I will try my best too.
Bruce Merrill led a life more interesting than most. He was born in Moss Point, Mississippi. He was a very active youth, always playing baseball or football. Bruce graduated from Moss Point High School in 1979. He attended UNC on a football scholarship. From there, Bruce would go on to play for the New Orleans Saints. His football days were cut short due to severe injuries. After retiring from football Bruce, pursued a career in law enforcement for the City of Moss Point in 1985. Within a few years, he applied to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. During his time as a police officer, Bruce would be awarded a Purple Heart after he was injured on duty. Bruce would later medically retire as a Sargent Deputy in 2003, serving a collective twenty-five years in law enforcement. He would also be recognized with a Medal of Valor. He spent the last few years of his life battling the beginning stages of Multiple Sclerosis.
Bruce Merrill was extraordinary man; he lived a life only few get the opportunity to. Bruce was a great football player, a dedicated police officer, a loyal friend, a great father, and a force to be reckoned with. Words do not do justice to the character of this man.
Thank you for reading about my father. Donations are never expected, but always appreciated. Donations will be used to help settle my father's affairs. Any donations over our goal will be donated to the National MS Society so we can hopefully find a cure.
