Leon Deraps Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
The year 2019 marks 13 years since United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Leon B. Deraps was killed in action while attached to
7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force. Lcpl Deraps was conducting combat operations in the Al Anbar province of Iraq on May 6th, 2006 when a road side bomb (IED) was detonated by enemy forces resulting in him making the ultimate sacrifice for his country, Leon was 19yrs old.  I served in the USMC with this amazing individual and have made it a mission to see to it that his name in never forgotten. I ran and completed the 2017 USMC marathon in his honor and will be running the 2019 Borgess Half Marathon on May 5th in his honor; 13yrs 13 miles.  My goal is to raise funds that will be contributed to his existing scholarship fund, which allows young individuals to set forth and achieve their educational goals knowing they are apart of something bigger.

The Leon B. Deraps Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up to promote the example of Jamestown C-1 High School graduate Leon B. Deraps. Leon was a student at Jamestown since Kindergarten. He participated in many sports including baseball and track. Leon achieved the Eagle Scout award, the highest honor in Boy Scouts. Leon was a member of the Future Farmers of America and was voted 2005 Prom King. Leon was an active member of Annunciation Catholic Church. During his junior year, Leon pre-enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following high school graduation, he was able to enter the Marine Corps as Private First Class due to his Eagle Scout achievement. Leon was promoted to Lance Corporal shortly before his deployment to Iraq in February 2006 as a combat engineer.  The Leon B. Deraps Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up to honor Leon’s ultimate sacrifice, spirit of community service, and to provide assistance to a good, upstanding student in their pursuit of furthering their education.

I appreciate your generosity as well as any and all contributions towards this goal. This account will become deactivated at the end of race day May 5th to which all funds will be sent directly to Leons Family.

Thank you.
