Leon's Home
Donation protected
Leon Washington is a 71 year old artist who has been in a state of homelessness for the last 8 years as a result of disability and death. He first lived in his car for a couple of years, and then, when he lost the car, he made himself a home on a covered bus bench, where he has lived for the past 6 or so years. Even without his easel, canvas and paints, Leon still creates, spending hours a day sketching with a pencil in a sketchbook, gladly giving the sketches to those he meets and sketches. He tells me everyday that he is being the best he can be with what he has.
We are raising funds to find Leon a permanent home. He has a hotel room until Jan. 3 thanks to the generosity of some amazing local friends. The thought of having to take him from a warm room with a bed and toilet back to a bench in the middle of a pandemic is too much to even think about. We need to find him a safe place to live in his beloved neighborhood of Lomita NOW.
Leon is a kind, sweet man with a huge smile and full body laugh. He is smart and does not drink or use drugs. I asked him last year what he wanted, and he said he just wants to be treated like a human being. I will never forget that. We are called to help those less fortunate than us. Please donate whatever you can to help us get Leon a place to live. It is truly better to give than to receive. The funds will be used for rent, utilities, groceries.
Also, for anyone who wants to see and buy his art, go to his website
