Leslie vs. Leukemia: For Connor

Leslie vs. Leukemia: My Gift for Connor for College

Connor Keating, my godson, is a cool young man whom I, my family and his friends adore.  A year ago, feeling run down and strangely sore following a day with friends at Kings Dominion, Connor was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Doctors believed participating in his senior year of high school might be impossible. With deep-seeded grace, resolve and intense chemotherapy, not only did 17-year-old Connor attend his senior year, he conquered it with honors, rejoining his place on the swim team as captain and earning himself admission to Virginia Tech.

Dreams of exploring options and scholarships for Connor over the Christmas break shattered when he suffered a stroke only days before (mostly) everyone's favorite day of the year. In fact, both Connor and his grandfather (my Dad, Jack Keating) served time together in the Fairfax Hospital system last Christmas and, as a family, we were given true gifts from God: Both men were home in time for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Accepting leukemia as a temporary setback, Connor moves along, thrives and greets each day anew. His leukemia protocol is a 3.5 year plan in the prime of his youth and will require him to travel each month during his freshman year of college to receive treatments at Inova Fairfax Hospital.  He is unable to earn a driver's license due to the stroke and seizure risks from the spectrum of medications. As a result, his parents, myself and other family members will take as many turns as needed driving back-and-forth between Tech and the hospital in Fairfax every month. Anything and everything for this extraordinary young man whom we love so very much.

What I can do for him - and each of my 11 nieces and nephews truly - I will do. Happily so. My heart is swollen to capacity with love for Connor and each one of them. A good thing I am single without children of my own because my love is spoken for and assigned for them.

In lieu of ever spending a dime on me for an engagement party, bachelorette party (now this one IS a shame...!), bridal shower or baby shower (which at my age would be a Biblical event), please help me give a gift to my Connor in support of his endeavors and pursuits as a freshman at Virginia Tech.

NEWS ALERT: Neither cancer nor college is free!

Connor could use a special gift from me, his godmother and proud aunt, towards life at Tech. I need a gift from you to make 'Christmas in July' a reality for me.

With love,
Leslie

Special PS: If possible, I would like for this to be a surprise for Connor! Please avoid sharing this campaign with him!
